Project Management - Popular Methods

According to Project management institute (PMI) 38% project don't meet the goals. To meet the project goals following methods have been approached to project management

  1. PMI (Project Management Institute)
  2. Prince 2
  3. SDLC (Software Development life cycle)
  4. Agile 
  5. Lean six sigma
1. Project Management Institue (PMI): 

As discussed earlier, PMI was founded in 1969 in USA which provides services including the development of standards, research, education, publication, networking-opportunities in local chapters, hosting conferences and training seminars, and providing accreditation in project management. 2. Prince 2 Framework:

Prince 2 methodology encompasses the high level management, control and organisation of a project, but not lower level activities such as scheduling.

  • Suitable project environment
3. Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC):

  1. SDLC stands for Software Development Life Cycle. A Software Development Life Cycle is essentially a series of steps, or phases, that provide a model for the development and life cycle management of an application or piece of software. It is usually used for undefined and changing requirement.

4. Agile Project Management:

It is software development based. Usually used for small and complex projects.

5. Lean Six sigma:

Lean Six Sigma is a methodology that relies on a collaborative team effort to improve performance by systematically removing waste

19th Century - Civil engineering projects were generally managed by creative architects, engineers.
1950 - Organisation applied formalised technique.
1956 - American association of cost engineers was formed.
1967 - Inter nation Project Management association was founded (Europe)
1969 - Project Management Institute (USA)


Henry Laurence Gantt was an American mechanical engineer and management consultant who is best known for developing the Gantt chart in the 1910s. He's knows as forefather of Project Management.

Gantt charts were employed on major infrastructure projects including the Hoover Dam and Interstate highway system and continue to be an important tool in project management and programme management.

The critical path method (CPM) is a project modeling technique developed in the late 1950s by Morgan R. Walker of DuPont and James E. Kelley, Jr. of Remington Rand.
The Project evaluation and review technique (PERT) developed by the United States Navy in the 1950s, it is commonly used in conjunction with the critical path method (CPM).


Project Manager:


Cost, Time & Scope of work are the primary function of project manager.
